Hup two three four
Keep it up two three four
Hup two three four
Keep it up two three four
Company sound off!

Ho, the aim of our patrol
Is a question rather droll
For to march and drill
Over field and hill
Is a military goal!
Is a military goal!
{etc.}

Invest Ottawa is a very militarized bureaucratic environment, where the upper management and chief entrepreneur mentors seem to mostly have a military background. Only a token involvement with a startup instead of being a founder is a prerequisite for being upper management of Invest Ottawa. The upper management are mainly ex-military or from large corporations. The upper management of Invest Ottawa does care about the entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship, though due to the very large and significant cultural gap – they have trouble relating to them. The divide between the experience, culture and problems faced by the mentor and mentees are significant.

This  makes these people :

Feel like this

Hopefully in the future, there will be action to reduce the cultural divide. A great idea for example is to hire someone who was one of Shopify’s first 10 employees. Ex Radian8 employees? Granite networks? Shopify is similar in culture and age to the startup founders today. It has financing from the Silicon Valley and is very familiar with the culture there. It has a noted presence in the Valley and its CEO visits San Francisco three times a year.

This is from Shopify, a company that has gone where almost all these new startups want to go.
